Quittor is a chronic deep seated inflamation of the lateral cartilages, characterized by necrosis of the inflamed part of the cartilage and drainage of pus through the coronary band.
Causes
- Injury over coronet in the region of lateral cartilages
- Wound near the coronary band
- Penetrating injuries of the soles
when the part of the cartilage dies as a result of injury, characteristic sinus drainage follows.
Signs
Swelling, heat and pain over the coronary band in the area of the lateral cartilages when quittor is acute.Sores that break open ,drain and heal over, only to break open
Treatment of hoof and coronary band abscesses today usually incorporates use of antibiotics, sometimes combined with poulticing.
surgical removal of the necrotic cartilage is considered the only successful treatment
The prognosis is unfavorable if the disease progresses to involve the distal interphalangeal joint.
