THROUGHPIN

  • Thoroughpin is a soft,fluid filled swelling at the back of the hock.It is located in the groove in front of the Achilles tendon,just above point of hock.
  • It is described as tenosynovitis of deep flexor tendon sheath.
  • The swelling , usually about the size of hen's egg.
  • This swelling is caused by fluid accumulation in the tendon sheath that surrounds the deep digital flexor tendon as it runs over the back of the hock.
  • Throughpin is usually the result of tendon sheath strain.
  • Young horses usuallyaffected.
  • It may be caused by paim of deep flexor tendon within the sheath.
  • In most cases it does not cause lameness.
Treatment
  • Draining the fluid and injecting the corticortsteroids into the sheath may effective if performed within a few days of swelling.
  • cold hosing and anti inflamatory can be given in initial stages
  • It is impossible to apply pressure to the sheath.
  • A firm bandage over Achilles  tendons
